Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

• Does Homestead Outdoor Products install products?

No. But we can recommend a contractor in your area to assist you with proper installation.

• My customer wants to explore product options. Can you help?

We can help you and your customer explore options and can assist you with creating a list of needed supplies to complete your project. Our showroom is a great place for your customers to mull over options.

• Are exterior vinyl products easy to clean?

Any household cleaner will remove light dirt. Applying light pressure with a cloth will remove heavier dirt. Steel wool and/or abrasive cleaners should be avoided to prevent scratching and other damage to vinyl products.

• Do exterior vinyl products expand?

It is typical for vinyl materials to expand and contract during temperature changes, so an installer should allow for this during the installation process.

• Will your exterior vinyl products turn yellow?

No. Ultraviolet rays from the sun are the reason some vinyl products turn yellow. Homestead Outdoor Products provides vinyl that contains titanium dioxide (TiO2), which prevents yellowing due to ultraviolet degradation.

• Do vinyl products resist mold?

Mold will not grow on vinyl (an inorganic material), but it will grow on accumulated airborne dust when subjected to extended dampness. Vinyl products are nonporous; therefore, they are easily cleaned with a solution of mild household detergent and water.

• Does exterior vinyl become brittle and break in the winter?

Vinyl is less flexible in cold weather conditions; however, unless it is subjected to significant impact, vinyl will not break or crack due to cold.

• How well do vinyl fences stand up against the wind?

When properly designed and installed, our vinyl fences withstand normal wind loads. Load variance is dependent on fence style and installation method.

• How tall can I make a fence?

Homestead Outdoor Products can make vinyl and aluminum fences up to 8' tall and chain-link fences up to 12' tall. For stability, fences over 6' tall should have reinforced posts. It is important to check with your local building codes to ensure compliance. We can't guarantee the performance of fences of nonstandard heights.

• Can I get custom styles or pieces made out of vinyl?

Yes. Many styles that can be made out of wood or metal also can be made out of vinyl.

• Can I use vinyl as a porch, deck, or balcony railing?

When properly designed and installed, vinyl products make very stable rail systems that meet IBC/IRC specifications. These railings can be used for porch, deck, and balcony applications.

• My customer wants her fence or deck repaired; can you help?

Absolutely! We can assist you with locating the items you need to repair fences and decks. We can also supply you with custom pieces, if necessary.
