As you do, remember IRC codes are updated each three years to ensure\u00a0the safety of structures and the well-being of the people in and around them.\u00a0Here are a few code reminders to help you make sure your projects pass code\u00a0the first time around!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Handrails should be provided on at\u00a0least one side of each continuous run of\u00a0treads or flights with four or more risers.<\/li>\n<li>Guardrails should be located along\u00a0open-sided walking surfaces. This includes\u00a0stairs, ramps, and landings located\u00a0more than 30 inches (measured vertically)\u00a0to the floor or at a grade below any\u00a0point within 36 inches horizontally to\u00a0the edge of the open side. Insect screening does not qualify as a guard!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Exceptions:<\/strong> Guards on the\u00a0open sides of stairs shall have a height not less than 34\u00a0inches (864 mm), measured\u00a0vertically from a line connecting<br \/>\nthe leading edges of the\u00a0treads.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Required guardrails should\u00a0not have openings from the\u00a0walking surface to the required guard\u00a0height that would allow passage of a\u00a0sphere 4 inches in diameter.<\/li>\n<li>Handrails at open-sided walking surfaces,\u00a0including stairs, porches, balconies,<br \/>\nor landings, should not measure\u00a0less than 34 inches in height and should\u00a0not exceed 38 inches (as measured vertically\u00a0above the adjacent walking surface\u00a0or the line connecting the leading edges\u00a0of the treads).<\/li>\n<li>Plastic composite deck boards, stair\u00a0treads, guards, and handrails should be\u00a0installed in accordance with the code\u00a0and the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>&gt;<\/strong> The walking surface of treads and\u00a0landings of stairways should be sloped\u00a0no steeper than one unit vertical in 48\u00a0inches horizontal (2% slope).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With spring finally here, it\u2019s time to start projects and kick off a new season of\u00a0building.
