How to Build Safety (Part 2)\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/b> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

1. <\/b><\/span>Be painstaking in the hiring process.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Coyle explains the importance of not hastily hiring employees who lack the qualities you need and aren\u2019t a good fit.<\/p>\n

While it may take longer to find an ideal candidate, it\u2019s worth the wait and extra work to hold out for the right person because toxic employees can poison a company culture quickly. And if you\u2019ve slipped up and let in a toxic worker who\u2019s bringing down your team, let them go. Ultimately, you\u2019ll be doing the employee a favor because you\u2019re freeing them to pursue opportunities that are a better fit.<\/p>\n

2. <\/b><\/span>Overdo thank-yous.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Demonstrating respect and gratitude in every aspect of work creates goodwill and strengthens relationships. Coyle explains that \u201cthank you\u201d fosters belonging, creating safety and connection.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not silly to thank a team member for helping you\u2014whether they\u2019ve handed you a hammer or picked up supplies. Polite responses to show that you appreciate someone\u2019s work and contributions helps them realize their worth and know their position in your company is safe.<\/p>\n

3. <\/b><\/span>Pick up trash.<\/b> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Naturally, leaders must have authority. However, Coyle shares that leaders should not be above doing menial work when necessary to help their team. When a manager or owner empties wastebaskets, cleans out a truck\u2019s cab, or does some other inglorious but necessary manual work, it sends the message that, \u201cWe\u2019re in this together.\u201d<\/p>\n
