This last article in our series featuring wisdom from Jim Collins\u2019 book Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap . . . and Others Don\u2019t <\/i>discusses how transformation occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Collins points out that good-to-great transformations don\u2019t happen in \u201cone fell swoop.\u201d He shares that there is a pattern of building up and breaking through\u2014a flywheel effect\u2014before getting to a stellar outcome. When companies try to skip that internal process and take shortcuts to achieve a monumental change, they risk entering a \u201cdoom loop\u201d where there\u2019s no consistent direction or progress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Flywheel-Inspired Food for Thought<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

1. Apply consistent effort.
\n<\/span><\/b><\/span>Flywheels store energy, helping to make an engine run reliably. In the same way, your constant attention will help ensure your business runs smoothly and gains momentum as you strive to meet your goals.<\/p>\n

2. Don\u2019t try to defy the laws of physics.<\/span>
\n<\/b><\/span>Be wary of any \u201csolutions\u201d that promise to accelerate the flywheel too quickly\u2014they might spin your business out of control.<\/p>\n

3. Leverage your existing assets.
\n<\/b><\/span>Build on the tools, processes, skills, technology, and other strengths you already have rather than starting from scratch. You\u2019ll get the flywheel moving in the right direction more quickly.<\/p>\n

4. Don\u2019t let things coast for too long.
\n<\/b><\/span>Though a well-established flywheel may turn on its own for a while, eventually it will need additional energy to keep it spinning. Like a work truck that isn\u2019t maintained, neglected parts of your business will fail if you don\u2019t put forth any effort to sustain them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
