A good\u2014even a genius\u2014leader cannot compensate for the problems created by hiring individuals who are not a good fit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">Consider a business with four workers. . . one \u201cbad apple\u201d represents one-quarter of the workforce. The company\u2019s owner or a supervisor will have to spend a lot of time managing that person. Also, that individual\u2019s poor attitude or shoddy work can quickly hurt the company\u2019s reputation and lower employee morale.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\"><b>How can you avoid this trap?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p8\"><b>Focus on building a team of capable people<\/b> who share your company\u2019s values and work ethic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><b>Be choosy about whom you hire. <\/b>Don\u2019t be in a rush to fill open positions with \u201cwarm bodies.\u201d With labor shortages hurting our industry, it may be tempting to hire the first applicants in the door. Instead, take your time and assemble a team that will work well together for the long haul.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><b style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Hire for the attitude, train for the skill.<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> While people can learn many trade skills, a positive outlook and motivation to do an excellent job come from within. <\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><b>Compensate your employees at or slightly above the \u201cgoing rate.\u201d<\/b> Remember that no matter how much you pay, the right people will perform their best, and the wrong people won\u2019t care about their impact on your business.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b> <\/b>Stay tuned for more about going from good to great!
