Capturing is critical because it frees your mind to concentrate on what you\u2019re doing at the moment while keeping other priorities on your radar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">To successfully capture things that need your attention, you must create a system that prevents items from falling through the cracks. A system that allows you to centralize information will help you stay organized, and it will hel<span class=\"s1\">p <\/span>avoi<span class=\"s1\">d <\/span>an office or truck cap littered with sticky notes and scratch pads!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">A capture system might consist of physical and digital tools. A few examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">A physical in-box or tray<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Notebooks<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Digital and mobile apps (e.g., Trello, Google Drive, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Email, text, and voice recordings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\">Try to keep your items in as few places as possible. The more \u201cbuckets\u201d you have, the more difficult it will be to keep track of them. Also, Allen suggests emptying your buckets regularly so that you act on the tasks you captured in your system.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\">A good capturing system might mean the difference between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Winning and losing a job<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Having supplies on time for a project or needing to reschedule<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Staying on time and budget or going over<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Keeping your promise to a customer or failing to meet their expectations<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #488ba6;\">Getting referrals from satisfied customers or learning that you\u2019re getting bad-mouthed on social media<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\">It may take some practice to perfect it, but it will be well worth the effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #658c64;\"><b>Tune in to our next issue to learn about Step 2: Clarify.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our last issue, we introduced the five-step process in David Allen\u2019s book \u201cGetting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity.\u201d\u00a0 IN THIS ISSUE, WE&#8217;LL ZERO IN ON THE FIRST STEP: CAPTURE.
